Business Spotlight This page is dedicated to promoting and supporting the businesses of Corner Brook. Local businesses will be featured on a continual basis with articles about their success.
August, 2006 The Newfoundland Shoppe and Gallery The bustling summer tourism season in Corner Brook is in full swing again and looks to get another shot in the arm with the start of this seasons cruise ship visits. The first ship – the Masdaam landed Aug 2 and its hundreds of passengers and staff were free to explore the many attractions in the city of Corner Brook and surrounding areas. This influx of cruise ship visitors and their disposable income is a happy site to local retail outlets, restaurants, and other service businesses. Local souvenir and craft shops, such as The Newfoundland Shoppe and Gallery, also benefit greatly from these cruise visits. The Newfoundland Shoppe & Gallery, located at 86 Broadway, was founded in June 2002. The actual site where the business resides has a long and interesting past in the city of Corner Brook. Entrepreneur Joseph Solo erected the building as a grocery store in the early 1920’s. In 1952 a major fire swept Broadway, consuming just about everything in its path. When the smoke cleared, standing defiant amongst the ash and embers, was Joseph Solo’s building. Ironically, on the opening day of the Newfoundland Shoppe & Gallery, this historic structure once again defied the odds. At 6:00am owner Heather Hemeon received a phone call saying, “Fire on Broadway”. Miraculously, once again, the Solo Building survived the blaze, but many other businesses were not as fortunate. The myth still remains today that the Solo building is “Blessed”. The Newfoundland Shoppe and Gallery has been a successful business venture from the start because of great customer service and quality products and that has not changed. Products sold in the store range from Newfoundland and Labrador books, pins, carvings, jewelry and ornaments to music CD’s, clothing, and art. Owner Heather Hemeon invites you to drop by and have a memorable shopping experience in downtown Corner Brook.
