October, 2006 West Coast Tattoos Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo? This is a question that many of us have thought about at some point in our lives. These days a lot more people are giving this question a thought as the tattoo industry as a whole has increased in leaps and bounds over the past two years. Many attribute much of this increased awareness and demand to a number of television programs that centre on tattoo parlors and their clients. This increased interest in tattoos across North America has also been felt locally with at least one new tattoo shop opening in Corner Brook during the past two years – namely West Coast Tattoos. West Coast Tattoos first opened its doors in May of 2005 and has seen an increase in demand for its services ever since. Located at 51 West Street in downtown Corner Brook, West Coast Tattoo has been building a long client list from all over Western Newfoundland and the Northern Peninsula. West Coast Tattoos has also branched out into other products and services since its inception and now offer body piercing, as well as custom wood burning products. Business owner and tattoo artist Bill Medhurst, who has been involved in the art of tattooing since the late 70’s, is very pleased with the growth of his business since setting up shop in Corner Brook. Bill has built his business around providing world class tattoo designs in a relaxing and safe environment. Bill caters to standard as well as off the wall tattoos and custom work, either designing tattoos to client requirements or working from designs brought to him. Bill offers all styles of tattooing including portraits and wildlife. Bill and wife Judy, who also works in the business, are not actually from Newfoundland but moved here after visiting the province for a few summers and really enjoying the relaxed way of life and friendly people. Bill who is from Ontario and Judy who is from New Brunswick feel they have lucked out by getting the opportunity to do what they love to do in such a great place. As Bill notes, “living and working in Corner Brook without the traffic, pollution and social problems that many parts of Canada and the US have makes us feel very fortunate for the opportunity we have. We love it here.” With the continued increase in demand for tattoos it looks like Bill and Judy will be kept busy in Corner Brook for a long time to come. West Coast Tattoos
