Fire Department
Fire Chief's Message On behalf of the members of the Corner Brook Fire Department, I extend a welcome to all visitors to cornerbrook.com. The Corner Brook Fire Department prides itself on being able to offer effective fire protection to residents of the City as well as to all those who choose to visit or work here. The department will celebrate fifty years of service to the community in 2003 and its members have a total combined experience in excess of one thousand years. This type of experience is valuable to each one of us as we continue in our efforts towards a fire safe City. Fire safety is not an accident. By working together, we can all reduce the numbers and severity of fire incidents. Although, each year, one week is set aside as Fire Prevention Week, we all should make the effort to be fire safe all year round. This department asks your help in preventing fires and welcomes your questions and concerns related to fire and life safety. Neville
Wheaton History of the Corner Brook Fire Department The
volunteer brigade of the Corner Brook Fire Department started sometime back in
the 1940's. At that time the volunteers made up four brigades; West side, East
side, Curling and Townsite. They also received help from the Bowater Pulp and
Paper industrial brigade if any assistance was required. The
Corner Brook Fire Department became a full time, career department on 8 April,
1953 after the Broadway fire of that same year. That fire had almost wiped out
Broadway, the main business area of the town at that time. The station was
located in the old Fire Hall off Broadway. The first Fire Chief was Mr. Michael
Smith of the volunteers. He remained there until the towns of Curling,
Humbermouth, Townsite and Westside were amalgamated and formed the City of
Corner Brook in 1956. After amalgamation there were no more volunteer "fire
brigades". The first Fire Chief after amalgamation was Mr. Gordon Brewer (8
June, 1956). When Fire Chief Brewer retired on 25 July, 1969, Mr. Clifford Burns
became the new Fire Chief (1 October, 1969). Chief Burns was followed in 1974 by
Assistant Chief Eugene Clarke who served until 31 December, 1983. When Fire
Chief Clarke retired Captain Robert Brake assumed the position of Fire Chief on
1 January, 1984. Chief Brake retired in the summer of 2001 when the position was
filled by Chief Neville Wheaton The
City's Fire Department remained in the old Fire Hall off Broadway until 4 June,
1969. At this time the department moved into the new Central Fire Station on
Charles Street. In 1971 construction was started on a satellite fire station in
the West end of the city. The West End Station (Curling) was opened on 21
January, 1972. Later in 1972 construction was started on a second satellite
station in the East End of the city. The East End Station opened on 1 March,
1973. Restructuring of the department in 1997 saw the three stations combined into one central station at the intersection of Broadway and Lewin Parkway. Areas of Responsibility within the City of Corner Brook The Corner Brook Fire Department is committed to providing fire suppression and prevention activities to the residents of the City of Corner Brook. In 2003 the department will celebrate fifty years of service to the City and takes pride in the level of service offered since 1953 and is looking toward increasing this commitment in the future The Corner Brook Fire Department is comprised of three separate, but closely related divisions. These sections combine to provide fire suppression, fire prevention and life safety protection to the residents of the City. The mandate of the department includes the protection of life and property as well as recognition of the environmental impact of large emergencies. The firefighters of the Corner Brook Fire Department are represented by local 1222 of the International Association of Firefighters. All divisions and operations of the Corner Brook Fire Department are under the direction of Chief Neville Wheaton. Fire Prevention and Administration Deputy Chief Bill Griffin holds the responsibility for the provision of fire prevention for the Corner Brook Fire Department. The fire prevention division understands the advantages of a comprehensive fire inspection and prevention program and is currently developing a more responsive program of inspections. If potential fire and life safety issues are detected earlier the quantity and severity of incidents can be reduced, thus decreasing the negative effect to the residents and visitors to our City. The department is working closely with internal and external groups to reduce the impact of fire-related incidents.
Operations
The training division is actively ensuring that
the skills of the firefighting personnel are maintained and enhanced. Under the
guidance of Captain Wally Fitzpatrick, the training program is developed to
include not only the maintenance of the existing skill set but is also preparing
for future influences. These influences include any innovative techniques to
battle existing situations as well as ensuring that the department is capable in
dealing with any new development or emerging risk.
