Summer Clean Sweep 2010

July 12th - 23rd, 2010

The City of Corner Brook Leisure Services is encouraging businesses, organizations and individuals to participate in a community clean up during the Summer of 2010.  Community clean ups improve the tidiness, appearance and visual appeal of our neighborhoods, parks, open spaces and streets.  Improvements throughout our city can be achieved in as little as 20 minutes of your time!

All groups and individual clean up efforts are recognized by the City of Corner Brook’s Tidy Towns Program.  Tidy Towns is a non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation.  Each year, Tidy Towns sends out teams of skilled judges who travel about Newfoundland and Labrador and visit communities who have entered in the program.  The judges base their evaluation on eight criteria: Tidiness Effort, Environmental Effort, Community Involvement, Heritage Preservation, Urban Forestry, Landscaped Areas, Floral Arrangements, Turf and Groundcover Areas.  This summer, the judges will be in Corner Brook July 26th, 2010.  Although winning would be a great accomplishment, the Tidy Towns competition is about more than just the chance of winning.  There are many recognized benefits that result from Tidy Towns and Community Clean ups, including:

·         Increased tourism

·         Physical and mental benefits for participants

·         Increased civic pride and community involvement

·         Participation from all ages and walks of life

·         Promotion of participants through various media sources

·         Decreased vandalism

·         Economic development and increased property values

·         Improved quality of life

If your business or organization is interested in participating in a clean up, you can register by contacting Catherine Power at 637-1634 or playground@cornerbrook.com.

If you already participated in a community clean up this summer, let us know about it!  Your efforts should be recognized and we want to hear about your clean up no matter how big or small!!

Bags and gloves will be provided to all who participate.

On July 26th, all participants will be invited to attend a “Thank you” luncheon and get together as an appreciation of your clean up efforts.  At this luncheon we will also be having a prize draw for all participants.
