Roads
The Public Works Division is responsible for maintenance of all city streets and sidewalks. With almost 140 kilometers (86 miles) of streets this is quite a task involving a dedicated and professional workforce. The wide ranges of duties include:
• Pavement Markings
• Signage
• Snow Clearing
• Street Sweeping
• Curb and Sidewalk Repair
• Asphalt Patching
• Catch Basin Cleanout
• Storm Water Management
Summer
The renewal of summer greenery brings the renewal of the yearly capital works program which means roads are under construction. You can view the plan for construction this season at City Hall>Projects.
If during construction there are road closures or other notices, they will be posted in City Hall>Notices>Roads. Residents and visitors are encouraged to check our notices page. Motorists should use alternate routes where available. If you must travel through work zones, please respect public and worker safety by obeying signage and driving to reduced speed limits.
In addition to a comprehensive capital improvement program, the Public Works Division is busy cleaning streets and storm sewers after the winter thaw. This process involves the removal of built up winter sand and debris left in rights of way and catch basins every year. If you have a concern about your street please feel free to call the Enquiries Line at 709-637-1606 or email city.hall@cornerbrook.com.
Winter
According to Environment Canada, Corner Brook has an annual snowfall of about 15 feet (450 cm), making it one of the snowiest cities in Canada. This means there’s a good chance a snow plow is operating in your area. Exercise caution when work crews are clearing city streets. Here’s what you should do:
1. Drive to the conditions – snow means slow!
2. Watch your kids – playing in roadway snow banks can be dangerous.
3. Try not to park on the street – mind the by-law!
4. Don’t push snow into the streets.
5. Help keep neighbourhood fire hydrants clear.
6. Make sure boundary markers comply with regulations.
To clear snow as quickly as possible, we have plows operating on six different snow routes. Priority areas such as arterial roads and bus routes are cleared first and residential side streets are completed in turn.
If you have any questions or comments on our snow clearing efforts please feel free to call the Enquiries Line at 709-637-1606 or email city.hall@cornerbook.com. As always, please check local forecasts to know what you can expect to encounter when driving in and around the city.
