Fire and Emergency ServicesFire Prevention
The Fire Prevention Division of the Corner Brook Fire Department has widened its responsibility to our community by enhancing existing programs and adding new services. Some city residents rely upon oxygen tanks to help them breath. Patients dependent upon oxygen will not be released from the hospital until they have a letter from the Fire Prevention Division confirming that we have visited their home and have no objections to oxygen being used there. During our home visit we ensure there is a working smoke detector and a certified portable fire extinguisher. An “oxygen in use” sign should be placed in the doorway of the main entrance. During our visit to the home we may discuss dangers associated with oxygen with the caregiver. We also provide the patient and the caregiver with reading material about the use of oxygen in the home. Each year someone from the Fire Prevention office will visit all commercial buildings, restaurants, and drinking establishments to ensure that exit and emergency lighting are operational and the opening and closing mechanism on exit doors are working properly. We do a visual check on all portable fire extinguishers along with the hood systems in kitchens to confirm that they have been certified by a technician in that particular industry. If the building has a sprinkler system, we expect to see a certificate from the company that installed the sprinkler system. The certificate should indicate that the system has been checked and is in proper working order. The Fire Prevention Division is also involved with any new developments within the city such as an existing building being used for something other than its original use or a new building is constructed. This is to ensure there is sufficient water in the area, the National Fire Code and the Life Safety Code is adhered to regarding the location of fire hydrants and fire department access, etc. EmergencyThe City of Corner Brook has full 911 emergency services.
