Some of these wastes can be poisonous, combustible, explosive, and/or flammable. When compared with other types of wastes, household hazardous waste is a small component of the waste stream.

E-waste contains toxic materials that can be hazardous if not managed properly. Landfilling e-waste is harmful to the environment because substances such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and nickel can leach out into the soil and water. These substances can be toxic and have been associated with cancer and neurological disorders in children. Besides health reasons, recycled e-waste can retrieve valuable parts and precious metals, such as gold and copper. There are tremendous value in reducing, re-using, and recycling these products when possible.
The City of Corner Brook proudly supports initiatives that focus on improving waste diversion and creating sustainable waste management solutions. The goal of these initiatives is to promote product stewardship; that is, citizens becoming conscious of the products we buy and how we dispose of them. By reusing and recycling old electronics, we can reduce waste and keep toxic materials out of our landfill.
