Hughes Brook Trail
Hughes Brook is located on the west coast of Newfoundland, just outside of
Corner Brook, near Irishtown.
The Hughes Brook Trail is maintained and
promoted by the Aquatic Centre for Research and Education. ACRE is an
institute whose mandate is to develop research and education programs about
the waters of Western Newfoundland.
The trail is beautiful, traveling from the Hughes Brook bridge along the
river, all the way to the estuary leading into the harbour. The trail area
is home to many species of plants and animals, some of which are rarely seen
in Newfoundland.
Some of the animals that live in this area are the Moose, the Muskrat and
the Beaver. Birds include the eagle, the Woodpecker and the Blue Jay.
The lower three kilometres of Hughes Brook contain boreal forest, fen, alder
thicket and a magnificent meandering estuary, home and stop-over site for
large water fowl. The area also shows examples of river erosion and
evolution and a pond ecosystem.
