THE HUMBER RIVER VALLEY

CORNER BROOK TO DEER LAKE, Route 1 Trans Canada Highway

Trans Canada Highway along Humber River

The mighty Humber River winds through the Humber Valley. The river is known as one of North America's best Atlantic Salmon rivers. Salmon anglers from all over the world travel to Corner Brook to take advantage of the slow deep steadies to cast for the champion Atlantic salmon. Visitors require a fishing license and a government approved guide. A list of fishing guides is available at the nearest Visitor Information Centre.

Fall colours in the Humber Valley

Fall in the Humber Valley is spectacular. Vibrant autumn colours appear in mid-September as thousands of leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange and gold. Colours are in their prime around mid-October.

Man in the Mountain - natural rock feature

At the heart of the Humber River Valley is Steady Brook, home of Marble Mountain and the magnificent Steady Brook Falls. The community itself, nestled among sloping wooded hills, is a good place to make roadside purchases of fresh fruit and vegetables in season.

Steady Brook Falls

Eastward along the Trans Canada Highway is Pasadena, a growing community nestled on the shores of Deer Lake. Pasadena Beach is a popular swimming area during the summer.

Deer Lake - view from Trans Canada Highway

Deer Lake began as a logging community that was first settled in the 1860s. Today, the town is the transportation hub of the Western Region. Deer Lake Regional Airport offers easy air access to Western Newfoundland. Deer Lake is also the access point to the Viking Trail, the highway traveling up the Great Northern Peninsula to Gros Morne National Park and St. Anthony. Visitors enjoy picnics and camping at the municipal park on the lakeshore. Don't miss the Newfoundland Insectarium, the only insect museum in Atlantic Canada.
