Cash for Cups Campaign

City of Corner Brook
MEDIA ADVISORY

The City of Corner Brook and Corporate Partners in the beverage industry are working together to collect discarded beverage containers in an effort to reduce litter and beautify our community.

A Cash for Cups Campaign will be underway in Corner Brook during the month of May whereby we will pay 5 cents for each used cup collected from City streets. The Campaign which runs from May 1st through to May 27th is meant to provide incentives to youth groups, schools, young people and residents alike who want to pitch in and help keep our City clean and litter free. In addition to paying 5 cents per cup there will also be 4 cups stamped and valued at $100 each (hidden among other cups) as an extra incentive for Campaign participants.

Beverage containers comprise approximately 40% to 60% of roadside litter and this litter can be found in all areas of our community, creating an eyesore, a hazard to wildlife and detracting from the City’s natural beauty. Too many people are throwing cups from their cars or to the ground when they finish their beverage. We hope to generate public interest to reduce littering activity while increasing corporate stewardship responsibility for the cups businesses generate.

We need your help and ask that you collect used cardboard cups for the month of May and turn them in at the Curling Club parking lot on Saturday May 27th from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm for cash.
