The City of Corner Brook Fire Department held a Hazardous Materials response exercise on Thursday November 9, 2017 commencing at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Civic Centre.
This exercise provided an opportunity for City of Corner Brook Fire Department personnel to practice their Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) response plans.
The scenario for this exercise involved activating and integrating the HAZMAT team to respond to a simulated accidental chemical release. During the exercise, Fire Department members performed reconnaissance, victim removal, sample gathering and release mitigation and decontamination.
“The exercise was designed to practice the City’s Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Plan, it was a great success,” said Todd Flynn, Director of Protective Services. “Our key objectives for this exercise were to practice emergency response functions such as establishing communications, establishing a command post, integrating the multiple functions of the HAZMAT response team, including rescue and personal decontamination. I am confident that we are well prepared to deal with such an emergency. The key take away is a continued commitment to expedient response times and effective communications.”
Every year the City of Corner Brook provides training, equipment, and simulation for our Fire Department first responders to be able to recognize and take action on potential threats to the public.
