Wellington Complex Soccer Field To Be Named After Doug Sweetapple

City of Corner Brook
MEDIA ADVISORY

The City of Corner Brook is pleased to announce that the soccer field at the Wellington Complex will be named in honour of Doug Sweetapple for his lifelong contribution to soccer in Corner Brook.

In October 2020, a joint proposal was submitted to the City from the Corner Brook Ladies’ Soccer League, the Corner Brook Men’s Soccer League and the Corner Brook Minor Soccer Association to name the pitch after Mr. Sweetapple. This proposal included numerous testimonials from former players, coaches, officials and organizers, all attesting to Mr. Sweetapple’s passion, dedication and contribution to the sport of soccer in Corner Brook and the Province generally.

Mr. Sweetapple was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame in 1987 and is a lifetime honorary member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association.

Council considered this proposal in November and it received unanimous support. An official decision on the naming was scheduled to come forward for ratification next month; however, given the recent media exposure on Doug’s pending departure from Corner Brook, Council felt it was timely to make the news public. An official ceremony will take place this spring in concert with the Doug and the soccer community.
