Regional Recreation Centre Takes Another Step Forward

City of Corner Brook
MEDIA ADVISORY

Corner Brook City Council has approved two important RFDs related to the new Regional Recreation Centre meaning another exciting step in the process.

Today a 49 year land lease agreement with the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador was approved at a cost of $1 per year for the duration of the lease. This now means construction of the new Recreation Centre can begin at the earliest opportunity in the spring, with an anticipated opening slated for August 2023.

Last week, the Design Build Contract was awarded to Pomerleau, the highest scoring company on a technical and financial basis, as determined by the City’s Procurement Committee. The contract is valued at $22,293,007 (HST included). The Design-Build process means the City will take on less risk on behalf of taxpayers, and maximize efficiency in construction process. With the approval to Pomerleau comes a new concept design which will add new infrastructure as well as maximize the space which is already available, including:

  • A 6 lane 25 m competition pool.
  • A full size dividable gymnasium.
  • A dividable multi-purpose room.
  • A full service daycare.
  • A child minding area.
  • Brand new change rooms
  • A fully accessible leisure pool.
  • A therapy pool.
  • A water Slide.
  • A lazy river feature within the leisure pool.
  • Wet and dry saunas.
  • A fitness centre.
  • A lounge area linking all of the facilities.
