Multiculturalism Week is a province-wide initiative that allows us to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism in Newfoundland and Labrador.
There are a number of events happening throughout the city!

These events are organized by various organizations in the Corner Brook area

ESL in Your Classroom

Tuesday, March 19  |  9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Grenfell ESL instructors and the ANC’s Business Diversity Officer discuss challenges of a diverse classroom and offer suggestions and strategies for supporting student success. Bring your questions and concerns for discussion. This event is open to anyone in the community that teaches ESL or international students. Registration is required at esl@grenfell.mun.ca.

Lunch Beyond Borders
GCSU Backlot
Tuesday, March 19  |  1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

This lunch is an opportunity for international students to interact with community leaders. It is meant to allow residents of Corner Brook to meet students from around the world and learn more about their experience in Newfoundland. At the same time, students get to learn more about our province by interacting with people they may not otherwise meet. Registration at international@grenfell.mun.ca is required as space is limited.

Canadian Citizenship Trivia (19+)

Tuesday, March 19  |  8:00 – 11:00 p.m.

Come test your knowledge of Canada with a special trivia night where the questions are drawn from the Canadian citizenship test. There will also be questions about the rest of the world. The event is open to anyone, regardless of citizenship, or whether or not they are students.

Raising of the Franco-Newfoundlander Flag

The Franco-Newfoundlander flag will be raised at Grenfell Campus for International Francophonie Day to highlight our province’s francophone communities and heritage, newcomers from around the world that speak French and have settled in Western Newfoundland, as well as Canada’s membership to La Francophonie. The ceremony will be followed by a reception in the Grenfell Campus AS Atrium.

In addition to facilitating positive interactions between newcomers, Canadian-born residents, and community partners, this event will also showcase client narratives about their settlement experiences in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Everyone is welcome to meet with a provincial government representative coming to Corner Brook to discuss provincial nominee programs and other immigration paths in Newfoundland and Labrador. Grenfell Campus students will have an opportunity to book individual appointments after the open session.

New Provincial Nominee Program for Entrepreneurs

Everyone is welcome to meet with a provincial government representative coming to Corner Brook to discuss a new provincial nominee program. The 30-minute presentation will allow attendees to learn more about new immigration pathways for entrepreneurs in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Meet the authors of Homes, one of this year’s Canada Reads nominees, at this free event hosted by CBC Newfoundland Morning’s Bernice Hillier. Homes is the remarkable true story of how a young boy emerged from a war zone — and found safety in Canada. You could win a complete set of this year’s Canada Reads books.

Francophone Concert: Robert and Bernard Felix*

This is a free concert open to the public. No prior registration is required. It is a great opportunity to discover more about francophone culture in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Sharing Our Cultures*

Thursday, March 21  |  9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

A multicultural fair highlighting international student displays and activities. This event will also showcase the multiple community organizations and activities offered for international families. There will be a gallery of artwork and murals; music and food. The event is open to the public from 2:30 – 4:00 with performances at 3:00. There will be coffee, tea and snacks free for all visitors – all are welcome.

More Than Just Labels

Join the discussion about racism, discrimination, and the impact they have on society and social life. This will be a safe space where everyone is welcome to exchange ideas on how to combat racism.

Multiculturalism Day at Colemans*

Thursday,March 21  |  4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Stop by Colemans to try recipes from around the world. International students will be serving traditional dishes from their home countries that have been prepared by Colemans’ chef. The recipes will be available for anyone that would like to try it at home!

Films From Away: 14 and Muslim
AS 2026
Friday, March 22  |  7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

14 & Muslim follows Sahar, Malaieka and Ahmad as they transition from a private, Islamic elementary school into high school, capturing what it means to be young, Muslim and growing up in the West at this unsettling time in modern history. This event is open to anyone. Popcorn, snacks, and refreshments will be provided for free. The screening will be followed by a group discussion.

Multicultural Craft Fair

Friday, March 22  |  11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Stop by to discover crafts from Newfoundland and Labrador, including indigenous art, and around the world. Items on display will be available for purchase.

ConnectorNL Coffee House

Friday, March 22  |  3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

This informal gathering is open to all post-secondary students and Corner Brook residents that want to exchange over coffee and snacks. ConnectorNL will invite seasoned professionals and mentors to come meet international students.

Multicultural Poetry Slam (19+)

Friday, March 22  |  8:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Come listen or share poetry, songs, or texts that illustrate the concepts of home, culture, identity or international experiences. Readings may be original work or favorite works by other authors, and readings in languages other than English are encouraged.

Multicultural Story Time and Scavenger Hunt*

Saturday, March 23  |  2:00 – 4:30 p.m.

An opportunity for children to engage with literature that celebrates and teaches multiculturalism. This is will followed by a multicultural scavenger hunt, where children will have the opportunity to discover games, traditions and activities stemming from countries around the world.

Multicultural Show*
Rotary Arts Centre
$10 for general admission, $5 for students
Saturday, March 23  |  7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

The tradition continues this year. This show will combine music, songs, and dances from around the world proudly performed by international students, Canadian students, and anyone who is interested in sharing their culture. The show will be followed by a short reception where participants will have the opportunity to exchange with the performers and sample food from local vendors.

The official end of Multiculturalism Week will take place at the Grenfell Campus Backlot. Come celebrate multiculturalism and diversity listening to music from around the world. There will also be an opportunity to get screeched in!
