Water Quality

As part of our continued commitment to safe drinking water the City of Corner Brook’s Water and Wastewater Division will be conducting its routine flushing of the City’s hydrants. This program runs from May to late September each year and is considered to be one of the best ways to preserve high water quality and maintain the reliability of the water distribution system.

Flushing is generally conducted between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. In most cases, customers will not notice any changes to their water delivery during the flushing process. However, in some instances, customers may experience a temporary slight drop in water pressure and/or discoloration in cold water. There should be no disruption in service. City Staff will also be inspecting and testing hydrants to ensure the system is functioning properly and ask residents to use caution if they are in the area of a flushing hydrant.

Can I use my water when hydrants are being flushed in my area?

When flushing is being carried out in your area, you should avoid using water for any purposes that require clean water such as preparing food and beverages, bathing or doing laundry. To avoid any inconvenience, please check the water before doing any of the above. You may wish to keep a supply of water for drinking and cooking. Under most circumstances, you can run your faucets for a short time after the testing is completed and the water should clear. Discolored water in itself does not pose a health hazard

How can I clear my water?

Turn on the cold water tap and let the water run for a few minutes. We recommend using the cold water faucet on a bathtub. Do not choose a tap that has a water filter connected to it as the sediment may clog your filter. Avoid using the hot water tap because it could draw sediment into your hot water tank. If the water does not clear in 15 minutes, wait 30 minutes and try again. If the water is still discolored after three or four hours please contact the City of Corner Brook’s Customer Service line at 709-637-1666.

The City of Corner Brook would like to thank residents and businesses for their continued patience and apologizes for any inconvenience during the flushing process.
