The City of Corner Brook has received a revised application from Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. (CBPPL) to harvest timber within the City’s Protected Water Supply Area (PWSA) zone. Harvesting timber is considered a forestry classification of use which is a “Discretionary Use” of the City of Corner Brook’s Development Regulations for this zone.
CBPPL has proposed to harvest timber adjacent to Eastern Lake and North of Corner Brook Lake; and to construct 2.75kms of road (blue on map). It involves mechanical timber harvesting using purpose built forestry equipment and excavators to construct road. The area of the project includes harvesting within a 330 ha footprint (orange on map), there will be 2 stream crossings.
Discretionary Use Applications within the PWSA are assessed by staff to ensure all regulations are met, and then reviewed based on additional parameters set out in Corner Brook’s Watershed Management Plan. Once this review is complete a public notice is sent out to ensure public feedback in considered, and the application presented to the Watershed Management Committee. Discretionary applications are not put in front of council for discretionary approval until all of the steps mentioned above have been completed and a comprehensive package compiled.
The forestry use in Corner Brook Watershed Management Plan requires Best Management Practices be applied.
