Transit Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Transit M-Card?
The Transit M-Card is a smart card and is a new part of our fare collection system. Once you purchase your first Transit M-Card for $5.00, you keep using the same card, week after week, month after month.

The Transit M-Card is the same size as a debit or credit card. When a customer boards a bus, they simply hold the card in front of the on-board reader to pay the fare. The reader recognizes what type of fare or pass is on the card and approves or denies the ride, electronically, in about a second.

To add additional bus fares to the card, please visit the Customer Service Desk at City Hall Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

In addition, you can add value to your Transit M-Card online at using a credit card (Master Card or Visa). Once the transaction has been approved, we’ll add the purchase value to your card electronically, the next time you present it in front of the on-board validator on any of our buses.

Do I need a Transit M-Card to ride on the Corner Brook Transit?
No. If you’re a cash-paying customer, everything stays the same for you. The farebox will still be on-board and the Transit M-Card reader will be added, so customers can pay with cash, or use a Transit M-Card.

How much does it cost?
There is a one-time $5.00 fee for new Transit M-Card activations, in addition to the price of the pass you are loading on the card. There is also a $5.00 fee for replacement Transit M-Cards that have been registered. Unregistered cards, if lost or stolen cannot be replaced and you’ll have to purchase a new card and a new pass, so be sure to register your Transit M-Card.

Where can I buy one?
Our Transit M-Card is available at the Customer Service Desk at City Hall Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. (Other sales outlets will be added in the near future).

What happens if I don’t register my card?
A customer who has registered a Transit M-Card that has been lost or stolen, can purchase a new blank Transit M-Card for $5.00 and we will replace the rides that were remaining on the lost or stolen card. If a lost or stolen card is not registered, we can’t do this and the customer will have to purchase a new Transit M-Card for $5.00 plus purchase new rides. Without registration there is no way to know who owned a specific card and, therefore, no way to cancel it when lost or stolen.

Registration of your Transit M-Card will allow us to email or mail you an annual statement summarizing your transit purchases that may be eligible for claim under the transit pass credit program announced by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.

Register your Transit M-Card – it’s easy to do and it’s well worth it.

How do I register my card?
If you have Internet access and your card in your hand, click here to register now. If you do not have access, you can call 709-637-1666 to register by phone.

How do transfers work?
If you are using a monthly or semester pass, transfers are handled by the card. Just present your Transit M-Card to the on-board reader for each bus you board. You don’t need a transfer, the Transit M-Card handles it all.

If you are using a 5-Ride pass, the same applies.

When does my pass expire?
If you are using a monthly or semester pass, the expiry date indicates the last day on which you can use your card. For example, if your expiry date is June 30th, you can use the card on June 30th, however, starting on July 2nd, the card will not work and will need to be reloaded. You can reload your card at any time 2 business days before your expiry date.

If you are using 5-Rides passes, the rides will not expire and will stay your card until you use them up.

Remember, your Transit M-Card is reloadable, meaning you can reload a new pass onto your existing card at any of Customer Service Desk.

What do I do if you lose your Transit M-Card?
Registered Transit M-Cards can be replaced for $5.00 and you won’t lose any rides or passes that were on the lost card. To report a lost Transit M-Card, contact the Customer Service Desk at 709-637-1666.

M-Card & Transit M-Card Account Terms and Conditions

Purchasing a Transit M-Card and loading a bus pass on it entitles you, to use the transit system.  However, like most bank cards, Corner Brook Transit retains ownership of Transit M-Cards and reserves the right to confiscate and not return or refund a card if it is not used in accordance with the regulations below:

The serial number on your Transit M-Card must not be altered in any way.

Do not deface or alter the appearance of your Transit M-Card.

When you are not using your Transit M-Card, it can be transferred to another person who would ride the bus in the same fare category (eg. Adult to Adult, Child to Child, Senior to Senior), however, each person boarding a bus must have their own way to pay the fare.  Monthly and Semester Passes can only be used by one person per trip.  10-Ride passes can be swiped once for each person boarding using the same Transit M-Card.  Transferring a Transit M-Card to a person in another fare category is strictly prohibited.

Tips

Always carry your pass with you. Do not leave it in your locker or unattended. Treat your bus pass as you would cash, because there are no free replacements for lost or stolen passes.

Monthly passes are sold by the calendar month, not 30 days from the date of purchase.

Confiscated Passes

  • A driver may confiscate your bus pass for the following reasons:
  • Improperly lending your pass to another person
  • Handing your pass out the window
  • Defacing or altering the appearance of the pass.

Caring for Your Transit M-Card

Transit M-Cards are very durable, however, your card may be damaged by the following elements:

  • Extreme heat or cold
  • Dampness
  • Bending, scratching, or punching holes in the card

Conditions

All fare media products are non-refundable.

There are no refunds or replacements for unregistered Transit M-Cards under any circumstances.  Registered Transit M-Card holders can have a lost or stolen pass replaced for a $5.00 replacement fee.  Once the replacement fee has been paid, we will then load the replacement card with the balance that was remaining on the original card at the time the card was reported lost or stolen.  Replacements can only be done at the City Hall Customer Service Desk
