Be road safe this long weekend, summer, and all year ‘round! With the temperatures warming up and more people out walking, running, cycling and more, it is important for everyone to be vigilant and safe on our roadways. Drivers must provide at least one metre or more of space when overtaking a cyclist or ATV, and must wait until it is safe to do so. In zones where the speed limit is 60kph or more, drivers must give 1.5 metres or more of space.
With more kids playing outside as well as pedestrians walking and running for their fitness or commute, it is extra important to be observant and share our roads and pathways safely. Motorists (cars, atv’s, motorcycles) and cyclists MUST stop at crosswalks for pedestrians. Crosswalks are always indicated with appropriate signage, and some have lights, so there is no excuse! In Newfoundland and Labrador, intersections are also generally treated as unmarked crosswalks, giving pedestrians the right-of-way.
We are excited to have our new Great Canadian Trail pathways open for the season, however please note that these paths are for non-motorized vehicles only. ATVs must stay on the City’s ATV-friendly roadways.
Let’s have a safe, healthy and happy summer season enjoying all of the exciting outdoor activities our City has to offer!
