Dark by Five
August 18 @ 7:30 pm
Dark by Five (dXv) returns to Gros Morne Summer Music after a two-year hiatus to perform three interactive and immersive music theatre events. A challenge to put into words, this innovative international ensemble weaves pop, classical, folk, and world music with elements of storytelling, theatre, mask, movement, and digital media in unforgettable experiences.
What Will Survive of Us? Respighi’s Pines of Rome anchors this show about memory, loss, and the love that remains. A few Beatles tunes, songs from Diederik van Dijk, and the music of Shostakovich carry us into the heart of this story, where a tough and tender soul awaits;
Firebird opens with Purcell’s famous aria, When I am Laid in Earth, as a woman contemplates her final rest. The music of Björk accompanies her eccentric determination to take the occasion of her burial into her own hands, building to the triumphant climax of Stravinsky’s famous ballet Firebird. The music weaves together dance and digital interactivity to dazzling effect.
The Muscle we Long With – Remounted from 2015, this show combines the work of acclaimed poet Don McKay with Aaron Copland’s masterpiece Appalachian Spring. Mask, imagery, movement, and song bring us to the edge of the rooftop where the owls are waiting for us in the dark.
Dark by Five is Christine Carter (clarinetist), Yvette Coleman (vocalist), Paul Fadoul (percussionist), Elizabeth Janzen (flutist), Lynn Kuo (Violinist), Kate Read (viola), David Maggs (pianist) and Diederik van Dijk (cellist), working with director-choreographer Shannon Litzenberger.
