The City’s water treatment plant and distribution system undergoes daily testing and monitoring to ensure it is safe for consumption. The City’s water treatment plant consistently exceeds effective removal of more than 99.99% of any present bacteria through multiple barriers including filtration, UV sterilization, and chlorine treatment. In addition to the many safety measures undertaken during the water treatment process, there is also a “chlorine residual” measure which is in the water after leaving the facility, meant to safeguard against the potential introduction of bacteria.
There are many ways we undergo repairs to water main breaks. Some may require a precautionary boil water advisory after, and some may not, in compliance with provincial guidelines. Any precautionary boil water advisories are issued as an abundance of caution because of our robust water treatment process. We take the safety of our residents and our drinking water very seriously.
The particular method of repair for the water main break which took place on December 27th would not normally have required a precautionary boil water advisory, however one was issued on January 3rd following a complaint from the public in the area of the water main repair. Samples were taken this morning (Monday, January 5th) and we await results, however due to further inquiries from the public we would like to reassure our residents of the safety of our drinking water, and the seriousness with which are are addressing this matter. We will provide a further update following the results of our tests.
The precautionary boil water advisory issued on January 3rd, 2026 is only in effect for the properties of 18 Park Street and 13 & 20 Commercial Street.
