“On behalf of City Council, staff, and the residents of Corner Brook, I want to express our collective heartbreak and support for the people of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following yesterday’s tragic events. Though we are separated by thousands of kilometers, the bonds of Canadian community are strong. We feel the weight of your grief as if it were our own.

To the families and friends of those who were lost: there are no words to ease the pain of such a sudden and devastating loss. We offer our most sincere condolences and prayers.

We also wish to acknowledge the heroic actions of the first responders. The RCMP, firefighters, and medical personnel who rushed toward danger demonstrated the very best of the human spirit. Their courage saved lives and provided a glimmer of hope on one of Canada’s darkest days.

Today we will be lowering the City of Corner Brook flag to half mast in recognition of this national tragedy.”

– Mayor Linda Chaisson
