The Mayor and Council of Corner Brook would like to comment on recent news regarding the executive restructuring at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Early in its new term, City Council met with MUN’s new president to discuss the future of the campus. At the time it was acknowledged that necessary but difficult decisions were coming, however we were assured that Grenfell Campus’ continued presence, its autonomy and its programming, was a high priority for the institution as a whole.

Grenfell Campus has been a valuable part of our community for fifty years, and we look forward to hosting students at this very special campus for fifty more. Grenfell provides exceptional educational, economic and social benefits to the West coast and has the potential to provide unique research opportunities which can positively impact the entire province.

City Council will advocate tirelessly for the students who call our city home—those who may choose to stay and work in our healthcare, forestry, or other vital industries—as well as for the employees whose dedication makes Grenfell the exceptional place to learn that it is. The stability of their jobs and the quality of the student experience are non-negotiable priorities for this council.

We have reached out to MUN management once more to continue the conversation. City Council looks forward to maintaining open channels of communication with Memorial University leadership, the Board of Regents, and the Provincial Government to ensure that Grenfell Campus remains a vital part of our region.
