Waste/Recycling Collection

The City of Corner Brook has strengthened its commitment to effective waste management through the late 2025 implementation of an automated garbage collection program. The City provides a 240 L cart for garbage collection, where residents are expected to bag household waste in clear bags before placing them into their carts, and a mandatory dual stream recycling program (blue bags) separating fibres from containers. While garbage carts will be collected with automated truck arms and recycling will be collected by hand on a separate truck, both garbage and recyclables are collected on the same day.

Just like snow clearing, this is an essential service that is not often interrupted unless conditions are especially poor and the safety of employees is in question. If our contractors cannot pick up their route on a given day, we will post to our social medias as well as advise people via Voyent, Alert (www.cornerbrook.com/alert). If service is interrupted, efforts will be made to get it on the following reasonable day (subject to how long the weather lasts).

Garbage carts should be placed at the curb alongside your separated recycling bags on your scheduled waste collection day by 8:00 a.m. If it is not curbside it will not be picked up. Automated collection arms require space to safely maneuver and collect each garbage cart. It is important that your cart is facing the correct way, with the arrows on the lid of the cart facing towards the road, and that it is spaced 1 meter from any obstacles to ensure your garbage is collected. . Each 240 L garbage cart can fit 4 (four) standard-size garbage bags, however residents may exceed the 4-bag limit provided their cart lid is able to completely close before placing curbside. There is no limit to the number of blue recycling bags. Please consult the waste collection schedule above to find out when waste collection takes place in your area.

For more information on what can be recycled or disposed of, please visit RethinkWasteNL.ca which is managed by MMSB along with various regional waste management authorities. Please refer to the Garbage and Refuse Regulations.

Residential Curbside Recycling Program

All residential homes in the City of Corner Brook are required to separate garbage from recycling. The City has transitioned from single stream recycling (all recyclable materials in one bag) to dual-stream recycling (separating recyclable materials into two separate bags) to reduce the instances of contaminated loads and further promote sustainable practices for weekly collection. Household garbage must be put in clear bags while recyclables must be separated by fibers and containers in blue transparent bags.

Garbage Collection

The City of Corner Brook collects curbside garbage weekly. Here’s a quick list of everything you need to know for the automated garbage collection program:

  • Place your garbage carts at the curb by 8:00 a.m.
  • Garbage must be in standard garbage bags measuring no more than 26 x 36 inches – smaller than “grocery store” bags and larger yard waste bags are not acceptable.
  • Leave at least one meter of clearance between your cart and any obstacles, such as parked cars, poles, snowbanks, recycling bags, etc.
  • In the wintertime, do not place carts behind or on top of snow banks
  • Flatten corrugated cardboard boxes and place in a bundle no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 30″.
  • Hypodermic needles must be placed in a puncture proof container prior to placing in garbage – they must not be placed in your recycling.
  • Broken glass must be clearly marked and packed to prevent glass from sticking out of the container. Place the marked broken glass container at the curb separate from garbage bags.
  • Do not place small grocery or kitchen bags at the curb. They will not be picked up unless placed into garbage cart with the lid closed
  • Do not leave bulk items at the curb such as household appliances, furniture, car parts, etc. These items will not be collected during weekly municipal collection.
  • Do not leave hazardous waste at the curb such as paint and paint related products. Please drop off during the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection event.
  • Do not leave construction and renovation materials at the curb, these materials will not be picked up during weekly municipal collection.
  • Containers of liquid will not be collected.
  • Do not use chemicals (i.e. bleach) on garbage bags or carts as an animal repellent.
