Staff at the Marina Redmond Centre will be offering three levels of lifeguarding courses for individuals 13 and above during three sessions throughout the summer. This is open to anyone who has the necessary pre-requisites for any given level. Once you have completed the highest level, you are encouraged to apply for a position with our lifeguarding team at the Marina Redmond Centre as well as summers at the Margaret Bowater Park outdoor pool! Individuals must be at least 16 years of age or older to work as a City lifeguard. To register for these courses, please visit cornerbrook.recdesk.com/Community/Program. Spaces are limited.

Bronze Medallion
When: July 7-9
Cost: $125
Pre-requisites: Strong swimming skills, current standard / intermediate first aid and be at least 13 years of age.

Bronze Medallion covers four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Participants learn tows, carries, release methods in preparation for challenging rescues. Course also covers victim recognition, entries and removals and drowning resuscitation. Endurance swim of 400m in 12 minutes is required for successful completion of this level. 100% attendance and participation is required.

Bronze Cross
When: July 16-17, July 21-13
Cost: $125
Pre-requisites: Bronze Medallion, current standard / intermediate first aid and be at least 13 years of age.

Bronze Cross students will strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. Endurance swim 400 m within 11 minutes is required for successful completion of this level. 100% attendance and participation is required.

National Lifeguard, Pool
When: September, dates TBD
Cost: $300
Pre-requisites: Bronze cross, current standard / intermediate first aid and be at least 15 years of age.

The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and the decision-making processes that will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, 50-meter sprint challenge, 50-meter rescue drill and 400m endurance challenge. 100% attendance and participation is required.
